David Nethercot
David Arthur Nethercot (born April 26, 1946 in London ) is a British civil engineer ( steel construction ).
biography
Nethercot studied at University College Wales, Cardiff with a bachelor's degree in 1967 and a doctorate in 1970. As a post-doctoral student , he was an Imperial Chemistry Industries Fellow until 1971. From 1971 he was a Lecturer , from 1981 Senior Lecturer and from 1986 Reader at the University of Sheffield . In 1986 he became a reader and in 1989 a professor of civil engineering at the University of Nottingham , where he headed the civil engineering department from 1994. From 1999 until his retirement in 2011 he was head of the civil engineering department at Imperial College London .
He has been married to Hedd Dwynwen Evans since 1968 and has two daughters.

He specialized in steel construction, aluminum and composite structures. One focus of his research was the influence of connections on the overall structure of frames. In recent times he has dealt with the progressive collapse of structures and light steel constructions and those made of stainless steel. He has produced around 400 scientific papers, 10 of which received an institution award. For ten years he was chairman of the British Standard Institute (BSI) committee for steel construction standards (BS 5950) and the British committee for Eurocode EC 3. To this end, he undertook combined research programs consisting of experiment and computer simulation.
In 2017 he was called in as a reviewer for the investigation into the fire in Grenfell Tower in London. He was already an appraiser for the roof of the Wembley Stadium, the collapse of the Gerrards Cross tunnel and the new Forth Bridge.
Memberships, honors
From 1997 to 2013 he was chairman of the British group at the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), was a board member of its technical committee (WC 2, since 1996) and was vice-chairman of the executive committee from 2005 and president from 2013 to 2016. After that he was an honorary member. In 2008 he received the Charles Massonnet Prize from the European Convention for Structural Steelwork. Since 1992 he has been in the Steel Construction Institute. and from 1996 chairman of the Joint Board of Moderators.
In 2009 he received the gold medal of the Institution of Structural Engineers and was its president in 2003/04. In 1989 he received their Oscar Faber bronze medal. In 1993 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering , on whose council he had been since 1996. In 2006 he became OBE . He is an external member of the Academy of Technical Science and Engineering of Australia and the National Academy of Engineering . In 1993 he received a D.Sc. of University College Wales. In 1991 he received the Telford Prize from the Institution of Civil Engineers .
