Man-Chung Tang

Man-Chung Tang (* 1938 in Zhaoqing ) is a Sino-American civil engineer, known for building bridges.

biography

Tang was born in Canton Province and sent to Hong Kong by his family to survive the turmoil of the civil war. He graduated from Chu Hai College in Hong Kong in 1959 and (with a German scholarship) from TH Darmstadt with a diploma in 1963 and a doctorate in 1965. He then worked at Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen, where he gained experience with cable-stayed bridges made of steel. and from 1968 he was in New York, at the engineering firm Severud and at Dywidag in the New York branch (as chief engineer and vice-president). In 1978 he founded his own engineering office (DRC Consultants, for Design, Research, Construction), in 1983 another (Contech) and in 1994 DRC in Chongqing . In 1995, DRC merged with TY Lin in San Francisco to form TY Lin International with Tang as chairman. DRC becomes the branch in China where a bridge building boom began in the 1990s.

He is the chairman of TY Lin International (TYLI) engineering firm in San Francisco , founded in 1954 by bridge builder Tung-Yen Lin .

He was President of the American Segmental Bridge Institute (whose Leadership Award he received in 1995) and chaired the ASCE Committee on Suspension Bridges.

From 1989 to 1995 he was an adjunct professor at Columbia University .

Honors

In 1995 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering . In 2018 he became a corresponding member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 2013 he received the gold medal of the Institution of Structural Engineers and in 2010 the International Award of Merit of the IABSE and the Outstanding Projects And Leaders (OPAL) Award of the ASCE , of which he is an honorary member. In 2000 he became an external member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and in 2008 the Chinese Friendship Award. He is an honorary doctor from the University of Kassel.
