Burke County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Morganton on the Catawba River , which was named after Daniel Morgan , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

The county is located in western North Carolina, about 35 km to the northwest from Tennessee , about 50 km to the south from South Carolina , and has an area of ​​1,334 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Caldwell County , Catawba County , Cleveland County , Rutherford County , McDowell County, and Avery County .

Burke County is divided into 13 townships : Drexel, Icard, Jonas Ridge, Linville, Lovelady, Lower Creek, Lower Fork, Morganton, Quaker Meadows, Silver Creek, Smoky Creek, Upper Creek, and Upper Fork.

Burke County was formed on April 8, 1777 from parts of Rowan County. It was named either after Thomas Burke , a member of the Continental Congress and governor of North Carolina, or after the state philosopher Edmund Burke .

The Valdese Elementary School (2013) is one of 38 entries for the county in the NRHP.

According to the 2000 census , Burke County had 89,148 people in 34,528 households and 24,342 families. The population density was 68 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.01 percent white, 6.71 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 3.48 percent Asian, 0.21 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 37 years. The distribution between men and women was around 50% each.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,629, and the median income for a family is $ 42,114. Males had a median income of $ 27,591 versus $ 21,993 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,397. 10.7 percent of the population and 8.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 13.6 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 12.5 percent are 65 years of age or older.
