Henderson is a city in Vance County , North Carolina in the United States and the administrative seat of Vance County. In the 2000 census, the population was 16,095.
The town was named in honor of former North Carolina Supreme Court presiding judge Leonard Henderson , who lived nearby and was a friend of early settler Lewis Reavis. The city was officially chartered by the general assembly of the state in 1841, but European settlement had already started around 1700.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the area of the city covers 21.4 km², of which 21.3 km² is land, the remaining 0.12% is water. Henderson benefits from its location near Interstate 85 and US Highways 1 and 158 and is part of the Triangle metropolitan area (Raleigh-Durham-Cary) .
In Henderson the source of Nutbush Creek , whose valley a few kilometers north of the city forms a large tributary of the John H. Kerr Reservoir .
Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Henderson had 16,095 people in 6,332 households and 4122 families. The population density is 754 inhabitants per km². The racial the population is composed of 36.76% White, 59.17% African American , 0.27% Native American , 0.64% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 2.36% from other races ; 0.77% are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race is 5.13% of the population .
There were 6,332 households out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.1% of whom were married couples living together, 26.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 30.7% consisted of single households and 14.4% had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.05.
27.4% of the population were under 18 years old. 8.9% between 18 and 24 years, 26.8% between 25 and 44 years, 20.6% between 45 and 64, and 16.4% were 65 years of age or older.
