Union County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Monroe , named after President James Monroe .

geography

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of North Carolina, borders South Carolina to the south and has an area of ​​1,657 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cabarrus County , Stanly County , Anson County, and Mecklenburg County .

Union County is divided into nine townships : Buford, Goose Creek, Jackson, Lanes Creek, Marshville, Monroe, New Salem, Sandy Ridge, and Vance.

history

Union County was formed on December 19, 1842 from parts of Anson County and Mecklenburg County. It is unclear whether the name was named after the federal union ("American federal union") of the United States or a compromise solution between the United States Whig Party and the Democratic Party , which could not agree on Andrew Jackson or Henry Clay as namesake.

Eleven buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Union County had 123,677 people in 43,390 households and 34,278 families. The population density was 75 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.83 percent white, 12.52 percent African American, 0.38 percent Native American, 0.58 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.02 percent were descended from two or more races. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.15.

28.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 33.2 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64, and 9.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For all females there were 99.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 97.1 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 50,638 , and the median income for a family is $ 56,197. Males had a median income of $ 37,125 versus $ 26,577 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,978. 8.1 percent of the population and 5.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. 10.6 percent of them are children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 10.4 percent are 65 years of age or older.

At the beginning of April 2008, Heilbronner Läpple AG opened the subsidiary LSP-Läpple Spartanburg Products in Union County. The plant employs around 130 people and mainly produces parts for the BMW X 6 which is produced in Spartanburg .
