action

Montana 1880. Trapper Kelly, nicknamed " Yellowstone Kelly", is asked by Major Towns to join his troop as a scout . The major expects this cooperation to provide a safe route through the Indian territory to ensure peace and order there. Kelly refuses, because he considers the occupation of Indian land to be questionable and does not consider the word-breaking white land robbers to be particularly honorable. He also wants to personally avoid a fight with the Indians because he hunts in their area and is tolerated.

Kelly goes back to the woods with the young man Anse Harper, who offers to accompany him and wants to live as a trapper. They are captured by a Sioux troop under their leader Sayapi and are supposed to die on the stake . But they are released because Chief Gall asks them to remove a bullet from the back of the Indian woman Wahleeah. Kelly saved Gall's life in the same way many years ago. Wahleeah was robbed and wounded by Sayapi. Kelly can also save the young Indian woman's life. This is how they escape the torture stake.

A few days later the Indian girl arrives at Kelly's log cabin . She fled because she didn't want to be Sayapi's wife. Kelly and Harper take care of the girl because she is still suffering from the injury. Shortly afterwards, Sayapi appears and demands the girl's release. Kelly rejects this request, referring to the state of health of Wahleah, as he has now fallen in love with the young Indian.

Gall accepts these arguments and forces Sayapi to forego Wahleeah. Kelly's hope that Sayapi would accept this and would have enough to do with the military in Indian territory is not fulfilled. While he is on the way to set up traps, Sayapi and 4 of his warriors rob Wahleeah from the log cabin and kill the young Anse Harper. Kelly goes in pursuit and kills the kidnappers, including Sayapi.

On the way Kelly and Wahleeah meet the strongly decimated group of Major Towns. They were attacked by the Sioux, the major himself was killed. Kelly holed up with the rest of the troop on a hill and expected the last attack of the Sioux. The number of soldiers is too small for them to be able to defend themselves successfully. In the fray, Wahleeah tries to ride to Gall to save the men. Gall recognizes the intention of the Indian woman and now knows that she risked her life to save Kelly. He has Kelly, Wahleeah and the last surviving soldiers leave ...

Reviews

  • Final script work for Burt Kennedy. His scenario for Yellowstone Kelly is based on anecdotes and episodes from the life of Luther S. Kelly, known as Yellowstone Kelly, a famous trapper and buffalo hunter of the 1880s. In the production, the old veteran Gordon Douglas achieves the perfection of his routine. The first-class B-Western found its consummate hero in the figure of the trapper Kelly, with his athletic stature and his clear mind, matured in the latent antagonism between white and red. The restrained, dry style, which also denies the temptations of the wild and majestic beauty of the natural decor, does not compromise the aesthetic quality of a film in which sensitivity and intelligence take precedence over each other. (Hembus - Western Lexicon)
  • A calm and carefully told adventure film without the usual Wild West romance; well photographed. (Film service)
