Roman villa near Lufton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman Villa at Lufton was a Roman villa at Lufton , a village in the parish of Brympton , South Somerset district , England . It probably dates from the 4th century AD when this region belonged to the Roman province of Britannia prima ( Britain ).

It could be excavated by Leonard Hayward in the years 1946 to 1952 and 1960 to 1963 . The building consisted of a 40-meter-long and seven-meter-wide structure, which was adorned by colonnades on the east side . In the northern part there were bathing facilities and an octagonal extension to the west, which must have been part of the bath. The octagonal floor plan caused a stir because it is rare and because many later Christian baptisteries are octagonal in shape. The presence of such an extraordinary bathing facility as part of a relatively simple corridor house also makes the excavations remarkable. The rooms were partly furnished with mosaics and hypocausts . Numerous ceramics were found, most of which date back to the fourth century. The finds are on display in the Museum of South Somerset.

At the end of the fourth century or the beginning of the fifth century the villa changed its function. Some of the rooms in the building were divided. There is evidence of metalworking during this period.
