Valley Falls is a village in Rensselaer County , New York in the USA . In 2010 Valley Falls had 466 residents. The village is located on both banks of the Hoosic River and thus on the one hand in the Town of Pittstown and on the other to a smaller part north of the river in the Town of Schaghticoke .
history
In 1871 industrialist James Thompson built a textile mill in Valley Falls . Almost all residents of the village worked in the company, which reached its economic peak in the 1970s and then experienced decades of decline. When the plant went up in flames in the morning hours of April 22, 2009, it had been shut down for at least ten years.
By 1863 Valley Falls also had a blacksmith, farrier , foundry, wagon maker, cooper, winery, three shops, and two hotels. At that time only the Greenfield – Troy line of the Troy and Boston Railroad , coming from Troy and leading to Johnsonville, ran through the southern area of the town. A second railway line was built later. This railway line North Pownal-Rotterdam Junction , which ran through Schaghticoke , followed the Hoosic River and also led to Johnsonville. At the beginning of the 1970s, the southern line was abandoned and largely dismantled; the riverside railroad is still in operation, but trains have not stopped at Valley Falls since the textile factory closed.

Demographics
At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Valley Falls was inhabited by 491 people. The population density was 430.9 people per km ². There were 191 housing units at an average of 167.6 per km ². The Valley Fallss population was 97.35% White , 0% Black or African American , 1.43% Native American , 0.81% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0% said racial , and 0.41 % % named two or more races. 0.61% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
Valley Falls residents distributed to 179 households out of which 42.5% had children under the age of 18. 55.9% of households were married, 15.6% had a female head of the household without a husband and 25.7% were not families. 19.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 9.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.20.
The population was divided into 30.8% minors, 5.7% 18–24 year olds, 32.8% 25–44 year olds, 20.0% 45–64 year olds and 10.8% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 women there were 91.1 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 92.1 men.
