Valley Falls is a village in Rensselaer County , New York in the USA . In 2010 Valley Falls had 466 residents. The village is located on both banks of the Hoosic River and thus on the one hand in the Town of Pittstown and on the other to a smaller part north of the river in the Town of Schaghticoke .

history

In 1871 industrialist James Thompson built a textile mill in Valley Falls . Almost all residents of the village worked in the company, which reached its economic peak in the 1970s and then experienced decades of decline. When the plant went up in flames in the morning hours of April 22, 2009, it had been shut down for at least ten years.

By 1863 Valley Falls also had a blacksmith, farrier , foundry, wagon maker, cooper, winery, three shops, and two hotels. At that time only the Greenfield – Troy line of the Troy and Boston Railroad , coming from Troy and leading to Johnsonville, ran through the southern area of ​​the town. A second railway line was built later. This railway line North Pownal-Rotterdam Junction , which ran through Schaghticoke , followed the Hoosic River and also led to Johnsonville. At the beginning of the 1970s, the southern line was abandoned and largely dismantled; the riverside railroad is still in operation, but trains have not stopped at Valley Falls since the textile factory closed.
