The al-Omari Mosque ( Arabic المسجد العمري, DMG al-masǧid al-ʿumarī ) is a mosque in the city of Bosra in Dar'a Governorate in Syria .

history

It is one of the oldest still existing Islamic places of worship. The mosque was founded on behalf of the Caliph Omar , who had recently conquered Syria. The current building was constructed between 717 and 721 and the construction was completed under the Umayyad caliph Yazid II . In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Ayyubids expanded and renovated the building.
