St. Ignace is a city ( City ) in the US state of Michigan . In the 2010 census, St. Ignace had 2,452 inhabitants.
geography
St. Ignace is located in the south of the Upper Peninsula on the north bank of the Mackinac Strait , which connects Lake Michigan with Lake Huron . St. Ignace is the county seat of Mackinac County . The eight-kilometer Mackinac Bridge connects St. Ignace with Mackinaw City on the Lower Peninsula , the southern part of Michigan. The St. Ignace Township borders the city in the north, but is politically independent.
history
The French Jesuit and explorer Jacques Marquette founded a mission station here in 1671 . The city was named after Ignatius of Loyola , a co-founder of the Jesuit order. After the Jesuits withdrew in 1705, the English took over the place. After the American Revolutionary War ended , the area became part of the United States of America. On February 23, 1882 St. Ignace received the status of Village , a year later the city rights ( City ). In 1882 a railway line connected St. Ignace to Detroit. Iron ore and wood were shipped. Commercial fishing was also an important economic factor for St. Ignace in the early 1900s.

In the summer months, the nearby Mackinac Island , a popular tourist attraction and summer resort, can be reached from St. Ignace by ferry. The Father Marquette National Memorial is located in St. Ignace . There is also the Museum of Ojibwa Culture in the city .
