The Mackinac Straits ( English Straits of Mackinac ) is an approximately eight kilometers wide waterway in the United States that connects the Michigan and Huron Lakes and separates the northern and southern parts of the state of Michigan from each other. Since 1957, Mackinac Street has been spanned by the eight-kilometer Mackinac Bridge on Interstate 75 .

It is located between the towns of Mackinaw City on the south bank and St. Ignace on the north bank.

The waterway is an important link for North American inland shipping. It was also part of one of the classic routes to the western United States prior to the completion of the Chicago railroad . In winter the Mackinac Strait has to be kept navigable by icebreakers , otherwise the shallow water could freeze over.
