Iron River is located in the west of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on both sides of the Iron River , which belongs to the catchment area of Lake Michigan via the Brule River and the Menominee River . The Wisconsin border is 12 km south.

The US Highway 2 leads in west-east direction as the main road through Iron River. In the further course, both highways lead out of the city in a southerly direction.
