Joel Gregory Mason (born March 12, 1912 in Iron River , Michigan , USA ; † October 31, 1995 in Grosse Pointe , Michigan) was an American football player and basketball coach . He played with the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League (NFL).

Player career

Joel Mason graduated from Western Michigan University and became a high school basketball coach after graduating . Since his goal was to play American football professionally, he took part in a trial training session with the Green Bay Packers in 1939 and received a professional contract. Before the start of the game round, the Packers gave Mason to the Chicago Cardinals trained by Ernie Nevers .

After a year of play in Chicago , Mason joined the Boston Bears, a team that was based in the American Football League (AFL). The team only existed in 1940 and then had to stop playing due to financial problems. Mason then moved to league rivals Milwaukee Chiefs to be active in the same year in other teams that played in lower class leagues.

Joel Mason moved back to the Green Bay Packers, who were trained by Curly Lambeau , before the 1942 season . As a wide receiver he was used together with Don Hutson in the Packers' offense and primarily had to perform tasks as a blocker . In 1944, the Packers were able to qualify for the NFL final . Opponents in the final were the New York Giants overseen by Steve Owen . The Packers won the game 14-7. After another playing year with the Packers, Mason ended his career in 1945. During his football career, Mason briefly played professional basketball with the Sheboygan Red Skins in the National Basketball League .

Coaching career

In 1946, Joel Mason moved to Wayne State University as an assistant coach on the football team . A short time later he took over the post of assistant coach for the basketball team. From 1948 to 1966 he was the head coach of this team. He continued to teach at Wayne State University until 1978, while at the same time serving as a golf instructor and sports director. In 1978 he retired.

Honors

After the 1940 season, Joel Mason was elected to the 1940 AFL All-League team. Wayne State University inducted Joel Mason into the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981 .
