The Gurtenbach is a tributary of the Inn in the west of the Upper Austrian district of Ried im Innkreis with a length of about 23 kilometers.

Run and landscape

The Gurtenbach rises at about 480  m above sea level. A. between the towns of Abstätten and Bubesting , southwest of the municipality of Mehrnbach , only a few kilometers east of Ried im Innkreis in the central Innviertel. Its river basin lies between Antiesen in the north and Waldzeller Ache / Ach in the south.

It flows in a north-westerly direction through the Inn and Hausruckviertel hills , past Wippenham , and then through the lower Inn valley , which it reaches at Gurten - the middle course up to this point is called the actual Gurtental . The character of the landscape is undulating hills and terraced land with profiles below 100 meters above sea level and heavily agricultural space with isolated, smaller forests.

From Gurten it flows almost to the north via Sankt Georgen bei Obernberg through the lowlands of the lower Inn, passes the town of Obernberg am Inn, which lies on a marl bar, to the east and flows 1½ km north of the town, at the municipal boundary to Mörschwang at about 315  m above sea level . A. , at Sadlecker / Jagerwirt, in the Inn , namely in the backwater of the Inn power plant Schärding .

The Gurtenbach has a catchment area of 101.3 square kilometers and is one of the more important small rivers of the Innviertel to the Inn.

The main tributary is the Nonsbach near Obernberg to the left of Geinberg (29.3 km 2  Ezg., With Simetshamer Bach 14.7 km 2 ), but today it no longer contributes any significant amounts of water. Other tributaries are Ellrechinger Bach (from Weilbach , 16.6 km 2 , with Murhamer Bach ) and Lautersbach (right at St. Georgen von Gurten-Dorf , 12.3 km 2 ). The remaining tributaries remain in their catchment areas under 10 km 2 , here only the Doblbach (5.0 km 2 ) at the mouth at Sadlecker / Jagerwirt von Mühlberg (municipality of Mörschwang) is worth mentioning.

In the valley of the Gurtenbach the Innviertelbahn runs between Mehrnbach and Gurten .

Nature and development

The Gurtenbach and its side channel drains areas that are used intensively for agriculture, is heavily built-up in the local rivers, has 65 transverse barriers, but has "largely been preserved naturally over long stretches", in the Gurtental also with shorter, freely meandering sections. Buildings in recent years are increasingly "clearly ecologically oriented".

As the Lower Inn, the estuary is one of the most important nature reserves in Austria (nature reserve and European reserve, European reserve, Ramsar reserve and Important Bird Area), with the Gurtenbach forming the southern border of the northern section of the FFH area Auwälder am Unteren Inn (AT3119000, nn19), which is City of Obernberg omitted. However, the Gurtenbach is cut off from the natural habitat of the lower Inn by the 1.2 km long, canalised section of its mouth, and in particular cannot be used as a spawning area for the stocks there. Of fish that is in the belts brook trout , grayling , chub , barbel and loach has, also on the middle and upper reaches Kingfisher encountered.
