The Menominee River is a tributary of Lake Michigan that runs along the border between the US states of Michigan and Wisconsin .
The Menominee River arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, Michigamme River and Brule River, not far from Iron Mountain on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The river then flows past the two small towns of Iron Mountain and Kingsford and continues its course south. It forms the border between Michigan and Wisconsin along its entire course. Finally, the Menominee River flows into Green Bay , a western side bay of Lake Michigan, between the towns of Marinette and Menominee . The Menominee River is 187 km long. Its catchment area covers 10,500 km². There are 9 hydropower plants on the river, which can be bypassed with short portages .
