action

At the beginning of the 1980s, a few wealthy young men in Los Angeles tried to get richer as quickly as possible in the Billionaire Boys Club founded by Joe Hunt. Tennis pro Dean Karny is among them. They want to illegally multiply their money with fraudulent investments using a Ponzi scheme , a scam that follows the pyramid system, and thus impress their friends. To do this, however, you need the help of con artist Ron Levin. But something went wrong in the coup, and the anything but profitable action ended with fatal consequences for people around them.

Biographical background

The film is based on actual events. The high-flyer Joe Hunt had committed a murder in 1984 after the Ponzi model he initiated ran dry, a scam made known by Charles Ponzi in the USA, in which the number of participants has to increase exponentially in order not to collapse. The handsome and charismatic Hunt organized this together with some other men from the Billionaire Boys Club, a group of friends, mostly from wealthy families. Their world had expensive sports cars, Armani suits, and pretty women. When the giant pyramid scheme ran out of money, investors became furious. Hunt was forced to commit murder and was convicted of killing Ron Levin in 1987. Dean Karny served as a prosecutor's witness in the trial. Levin was Hunt's confidante, trusted advisor, and best friend, and had disappeared on June 6, 1984 at the age of 42. His body was never found.

reception

Carlos Aguilar of The Wrap says, like in his previous films, James Cox managed to recruit great actors, but only to create yet another bewilderingly melodramatic and stilted film. Emma Roberts , the aspiring artist and the only female character with more than a few speaking lines, is particularly wasted, says Aguilar, and worse is Cary Elwes ' ridiculous and repulsive portrayal of Andy Warhol , whose presence can only be explained by the director's request can contribute his vision of the elitism of the early 1980s. Aguilar goes on to say that the film is a pure mash-up of The Wolf of Wall Street , The Social Network and the indie heist film American Animals , but without the inventiveness or texture of any of these films.
