Kingsman: The Secret Service

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a British - American comedy comedy directed by Matthew Vaughn . It is the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and, unlike the first part, is not based on a comic book by Mark Millar . The film was released in the USA on September 22, 2017, in Germany on September 21, 2017.

action

A year has passed since the Kingsman, privately funded spies, saved the world from mad Valentine. Eggsy Unwin is now an integral part of the secret organization and, as the new "Agent Galahad", has followed in the footsteps of his late mentor Harry Hart, in whose house he now lives. Together with the Swedish Princess Tilde, he has started a new life as a Kingsman. The peace is disrupted by the surprise appearance of Charlie Hesketh, a former Kingsman agent candidate who defected to Valentine. One day he turns up in front of the Kingsman quarters on Savile Row and is obviously looking for revenge. On a chase through London, Eggsy and Charlie have a relentless fight in a taxi. Charlie loses his cybernetic arm, which remains in the taxi, while Eggsy manages to escape. Unnoticed, Charlie manages to control the arm from a distance and thereby hack into the Kingsman's address book. He has access to all private residential addresses of the agents and to the locations of the Kingsman quarters. The next morning there is a meeting of the Kingsman, in which the new "Arthur" and Eggsy as well as Roxy and Merlin, who helped Eggsy at the time, take part. Eggsy learns from Merlin that Charlie's implant was damaged when Eggsy electrified him in Valentine's bunker a year ago, and that he lost his arm and vocal cords as a result.

While Eggsy meets his in-laws for the first time, the psychopathic drug lord Poppy Adams, whom Charlie now works for , launches rocket attacks on the Kingsman agents, killing all members - including Roxy and the new Arthur - with the exception of Eggsy and Merlin. Eggsy was not in his new home at the time of the attack, however his best friend Brendan and his dog JB were killed. Merlin gets away with life because he does not have his current address in the Kingsman address book. The two start the so-called Doomsday Protocol, which is in a well-hidden safe at a wine merchant. It turns out to be a “Statesman” branded bottle of whiskey. Behind it is in truth an American secret organization similar to the Kingsman, which disguises itself as a whiskey distillery.

Merlin and Eggsy travel to Kentucky, where Harry Hart fought in church a year ago and Valentine shot him in the head after the fight. They break into a Statesman storeroom and are caught red-handed and captured by Agent Tequila. He wants to know from the British agents what brought them to the Statesman. Although they both tell him the truth, Tequila doesn't believe them and is convinced that the two have come to rescue the lepidopterist who is in the hands of the Statesman. That mysterious butterfly researcher is actually Harry Hart, who survived the headshot in Kentucky but has suffered from memory loss since then. Tequila threatens to shoot him, but Ginger steps in and convinces him that the Kingsman are allies. Harry neither recognizes his longtime friend Merlin nor his protégé Eggsy and has no memory of his time as Kingsman. After seeing each other again, a flashback explains how Harry survived the shot thanks to the Stateman's modern technology, a special gel mask.

Kingsman and Statesman work together to uncover the real motivations behind Poppy Adams' secret organization, The Golden Circle. To find out where the headquarters of the “Golden Circle” is, Eggsy and Tequila want to shadow Charlie's girlfriend, Clara von Glucksberg. Before they can start, tequila will develop a blue rash. Agent Champagne, leader of the Statesman, then orders Eggsy to carry out the mission with Agent Whiskey. The two men shadow Clara at the Glastonbury Festival . Eggsy succeeds in placing a tracking device in Clara's body during sex. Since he had previously confessed to Tilde that he would have to sleep with the target person on his mission, the two of them had their first big argument, which ended in a separation.

Back in Kentucky, Eggsy manages to cure Harry's amnesia by confronting him with the Kingsman's final exam in which the candidates are supposed to shoot their dogs. Eggsy gives Harry a puppy that looks like young Mr. Pickle and threatens to shoot the dog. Through this stressful situation Harry regains his memory, but has lost a lot of his abilities due to his injury. For example, in a bar fight - almost identical to the pub fight from Kingsman: The Secret Service - he misses an opponent with a thrown glass. In addition, Harry Hart repeatedly hallucinations of butterflies, which severely impair his concentration.

Drug Baroness Poppy takes a video message to the President of the United States revealing that she has infused her drugs (including cannabis, cocaine, and heroin) with a slow-acting poison that shows symptoms at four different levels. In the first stage, a blue rash develops, as was the case with tequila, which was on the trail of drug dealers and therefore came into contact with these drugs. In the second stage, the victims fall into a kind of madness and dance. In the third stage, a paralysis sets in, which finally leads to stage 4: death. The only antidote for the poison is in Poppy's hands. She demonstrates this with Elton John , who is under her control and shows signs of level 3 of the poison. After taking the antidote, his condition improves within a few seconds. Poppy calls for drug legalization and immunity for her company. In return, she will hand over the antidote to the citizens, which she keeps hidden in numerous large cities.

The US President is not ready to respond to Poppy Adams' demands, but wants to sacrifice part of the population, since drug users are only criminals in his eyes anyway. In the meantime, the Statesman overheard a call from Clara and learned about a meeting with Charlie in Italy, where an antidote lab is located. Harry, Eggsy and Whiskey make their way to Italy, where they want to get an ampoule to be able to reproduce the antidote. Eggsy steals an ampoule, which is apparently accidentally destroyed by Whiskey when the agents are attacked by Poppy's men. Harry suspects that the ampoule was not broken accidentally and shoots the statesman in the head. Eggsy, who does not share Harry's theory, blames himself for the incident because he has taken away the apparently not fully recovered and confused Harry Hart. He can save the life of whiskey using the same technique that saved Harry back then and covers his attack on whiskey against the Statesman.

The Statesman Quarter has come one step closer to tracking down Poppy. In an email you can find the coordinates of a quarter in Cambodia where Poppy is in her so-called "Poppy Land". Harry, Eggsy and Merlin are just planning how to proceed when Eggsy suddenly receives a video call from Princess Tilde showing symptoms of Poppy's venom. During the phone call, Tilde freezes and reaches the 3rd level of poison. In a fit of panic, Eggsy vows to the paralyzed Tilde that he will save her and marry her, before setting off for Cambodia with Merlin and Harry on a Statesman plane . Meanwhile, Ginger is treating Whiskey and restoring his memory by showing him a photo of his dead wife. He leaves to support the three Kingsman. When the trio, armed with Stateman props, make their way through the jungle, Eggsy accidentally steps on a land mine. Merlin sacrifices himself for his friends by taking Eggsy's place on the mine and attracting Poppy's guardians. Only when they are in close proximity to him does Merlin step off the mine. The explosion not only kills Harry Hart's longtime colleague, but the Guardians as well.

Harry and Eggsy attack Poppy Land together, where they meet again with Charlie, who has an improved cybernetic arm. They manage - with the help of Elton John, among others - to eliminate their opponents, including Charlie, until only Poppy remains. They give the drug baroness an overdose of heroin and in this way receive the password that activates the drones that deliver the antidote across the country. Before Harry Hart can activate the drones, Whiskey appears, who actually turns out to be a traitor. Whiskey doesn't work for Poppy, but has motives similar to the American president. He, too, wants all drug users to die from the poison, as his pregnant wife was killed by two meth addicts . He also thinks that after the death of the drug addict, in his eyes "criminals", the shares of Statesman will rise significantly, which he promises a sharp increase in wages. The two Kingsman agents manage to defeat Whiskey in a fight and activate the drones that distribute the antidote around the world.

The Statesman assure Harry and Eggsy that they will help them rebuild the Kingsman and have therefore set up a whiskey distillery in Scotland. Since a place in the ranks of the Statesman has become vacant with the death of Whiskeys, Champagne offers this position to one of the two Galahads. Neither Eggsy nor Harry seem interested in switching to their American cousins. Instead, Ginger Ale takes the chance to finally become a sales agent. She had tried that over and over in previous years, but Whiskey had spoken out against it.

Eggsy keeps his promise and marries Princess Tilde of Sweden. Harry Hart acts as Eggsy's best man. The story ends with Tequila arriving in a bespoke suit outside the Kingsman's new quarters in London.

production

When Fox confirmed that a sequel was in the works, it was still unclear whether Matthew Vaughn would actually direct, as he had never returned for the sequels to his films. Vaughn had already stated that he would like to direct a possible sequel. But it wasn't until June 2015 that he confirmed the takeover of directing and said in an interview with Yahoo: "I love these characters and I want to work with them again, so I'll probably break my rule (...)". He also hoped Colin Firth would be there again.

On January 25, 2016, Taron Egerton confirmed his return as Eggsy Unwin in Kingsman: The Golden Circle on Twitter . Filming started in London at the end of March 2016. At the same time it was also announced that Edward Holcroft would again act as Charlie Hesketh in the film. On April 7, 2016, the lead actor Egerton published the first official movie poster for the sequel on Twitter with the note: "A message from an old friend." The poster showed Kingsman glasses with a darkened lens and was signed by Harry Hart / Galahad (Colin Firth), who was killed by his adversary Richmond Valentine ( Samuel L. Jackson ) in Kingsman: The Secret Service . Since Hart's corpse was never shown in the film and the sensitive Valentine never verified the agent's death, fans of the spy film have hoped to the last that Hart could have survived the shot in the head. The poster seems to confirm this, suggesting that Hart lost an eye from the injury - hence the darkened lens. This was finally confirmed by the first trailer in which Colin Firth is named as an actor and can be seen wearing glasses with dark glasses. On April 8, 2016 the British actress Sophie Cookson announced her comeback as Roxanne "Roxy" Morton / Lancelot, Mark Strong will again play Merlin. On April 9, 2016, Pedro Pascal , who became internationally famous as Oberyn Martell in the US series Game of Thrones , announced his participation in Kingsman: The Golden Circle on Twitter; he would take on the role of Agent Whiskey. On April 14, 2016, Channing Tatum also joined the Kingsman cast and announced this with an alternative film poster based on the message from Harry Hart. On May 17, 2016, British musician Elton John confirmed his participation in Kingsman: The Golden Circle .

Mark Strong revealed in an interview that there is an alternate ending to the sequel in which Merlin survives but loses his legs. He receives prostheses, much like Gazelle had in Kingsman: The Secret Service . Images from the filming of Eggsy and Tilde's wedding, showing Mark Strong with green socks for the green screen recordings, spread on social media as early as 2016. However, one test audience reacted negatively to the ending in which Merlin survived. Matthew Vaughn therefore opted for a different ending, in which Merlin actually dies in the explosion.

reception

Kingsman: The Golden Circle achieved a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 272 reviews and an average rating of 5.3 / 10. Metacritic gave it a rating of 44/100 based on 44 reviews.

Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone that the sequel was as "wacky and over the top" as you'd expect - only more. The stunts "go beyond the laws of physics", but they are no less fun. Johnny Oleksinski said the film had "funny" moments in the New York Post and praised the cast, but it was "too distracted" and "much too overloaded". In his review, Carsten Baumgardt awarded 3.5 out of 5 possible stars on film releases and said that the “usual over-the-top, absurdly detached action-fun excess” lacked something “the freshness, the unpredictability and the brutal punch of the original” "By blatant action, a lot of self-irony and a real star lineup in the supporting roles" but cushioned. The film service ruled: “The action comedy, based on a comic series, relies less on gun violence than on physical use, which is pepped up by futuristic techno gadgets. Compared to its sparkling predecessor, the sequel looks less fresh, but with its uninhibited actors and curious set designs, it is definitely attractive. "

Awards (selection)

The film won a British Film Designers Guild Award in 2017 and was awarded the Empire Award for Best Thriller in 2018 .

continuation

In September 2017, film producer Matthew Vaughn revealed that he plans to wrap up the story with a third installment. The Kingsman universe could continue after the trilogy with new agents and recruits. Vaughn also believes that it is possible to make its own character spin-off films or Statesman films. In September 2020, the prequel The King's Man: The Beginning (OT: The King's Man ), which is about the beginnings of the Kingsman, will be released.
