Monia Chokri (born June 27, 1982 in Québec ) is a Canadian actress and film director .

Life

Monia Chokri was born in Québec in 1982 and trained as an actress at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique in Montreal . Her mother is of Scottish descent with Scandinavian roots, and her father comes from the Tunisian Berber tradition. Xavier Dolan based her character's passionate playing style on her Arab origins.

First, she starred in several theater productions in Montreal before 2007 her film debut in the ténèbres L'Âge of Denys Arcand was. In 2010 she appeared as Marie in Heartbeats . In it, her role falls in love with the same man as her gay friend Francis, played by Xavier Dolan . Her acting performance has received positive acclaim from critics, including Le Monde .

Her debut as a director, the short film Somebody very special (Quelqu'un d'extraordinaire) , was released in 2013 and won not only the Prix ​​Jutra for the best short film, but also international prizes, for example at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin .
