Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää (born 1977 in Porvoo , Finland ) is a Finnish director. He studied film directing at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki .

life and work

Valkeapää drew cartoons in his youth, which he published himself. He worked as a graphic artist and illustrator.

With the two short films Eyes Closed No Hands (original title: Silmät kiinni ilman käsiä , 2000) and The Fall (original title: Keinu , 2003) Valkeapää won numerous awards at international film festivals. He has also directed many television commercials.

In his first feature film The Visitor (original title: Muukalainen , 2008) he tells the story of a mute boy. The perspective of the dark cinematic fairy tale story can be discovered at a distance and mostly the viewer's view is blocked by objects such as bars, the film often only gives an idea of ​​what is happening in the dark. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and received the Nordic Film Award and the Kodak Nordic Vision Award at the Gothenburg International Film Festival . The visitor came to German cinemas on November 5, 2009 .

The style of Valkeapää has been compared to that of the Soviet film director Andrej Tarkowski , while he sees himself in the tradition of Fritz Lang and FW Murnau .
