Monsieur Killerstyle (original title Le daim , international title Deerskin ) is a comedy film by Quentin Dupieux , which was released in French cinemas on June 19, 2019.

action

Georges is very happy about his new jacket made from 100% deerskin from Italian production. He has spent a small fortune on it, but the acquisition is also the first step in a reinvention process in which Georges breaks the connection to his past and enjoys a newfound freedom.

The destitute Georges moves into a remote country hotel and declares himself a filmmaker. Since he received a small camcorder from the seller of the jacket, he begins to document his everyday life, with the brown texture of his jacket being one of his most popular motifs. Soon he has become so familiar with his jacket, which shows off his broad cross and makes him feel like a hero from a 60-year-old western, that they start conversations. Georges befriends the waitress Denise, who also makes films, which is why he claims to be making a film in the area.

production

It was directed by Quentin Dupieux , who also wrote the script. Originally, Dupieux had written the script in English, set it in the desert and had a big, powerful actor in mind who was supposed to wear a jacket that was much too small. Ultimately, he adapted the material for France and found the mountain landscape, which he was not familiar with himself.

The main roles of Denise and Georges are played by Adèle Haenel and Jean Dujardin .

A first trailer was presented at the beginning of May 2019. The film celebrated its world premiere on May 15, 2019 as part of the Cannes International Film Festival as the opening film of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs, Directors' Fortnight, and was released in French cinemas on June 19, 2019 by Diaphana. In July 2019 the film was shown at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival , in August 2019 at the Melbourne International Film Festival. In September 2019 a screening took place at Fantastic Fest , as well as at the Toronto International Film Festival , where the film was shown as part of the special presentations. At the beginning of October 2019 it will be presented at the London Film Festival , then at the Film Festival Cologne . A theatrical release in Germany is planned for April 30, 2020. A start date in the USA, also planned for spring 2020, has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Allan Hunter of Screen Daily describes the film as a mixture of black comedy and empathetic character study, and the outstanding presence of Jean Dujardin and Adèle Haenel should help raise the film above cult and curiosity status and also bring it to a wider mainstream audience. Quentin Dupieux manages in the film to maintain the credibility and an unpredictability at the same time, while he leads the viewer through a series of unlikely developments, whereby one does not know whether one is experiencing a form of mental breakdown or the origin story of a relentless serial killer is being told. Through Georges' relationship with an inanimate object, there are all kinds of hints for film fans that are reminiscent of films like Dead of Night from 1945 or Peeping Tom by Michael Powell from 1959, according to Hunter. The short running time would make the film feel a little underdeveloped in some places, but it also offers enough originality to capture those looking for something unusual and unexpected.

Frédéric Jaeger from the Internet portal Critic.de writes that Adèle Haenel in her role as Denise is in this deserted place somewhere in France's sad mountain landscape as a bartender, the counterpart to the many ghosts that appear here or there in films. The constellation is simple, the framework is quickly defined, and the director, who specializes in absurd settings and grotesque figures, knows how important minimalism is: “In absurd comedy, less is often more because the unreal only needs our willingness to relate it our experiences. ”Dupieux leaves nothing in the way of the uncanny, ghostly potential of the film, but above all the film plays with contradicting impressions of Dujardin's body. “Sometimes he is dominant, then very small. In the shower his upper body is massive, in the many scenes in the car he is almost disembodied, just a head or not even that. ”Dupieux's material-versus-human constellation can also be read metaphorically and critically as an alternative reality , in which we follow our fetishes for the thing: “Let go, give up, believe. It doesn't take much for that and Dupieux delivers just the right amount of what little. "
