Frankie is a film drama directed by Ira Sachs that premiered on May 20, 2019 in the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival , where it competed for the Palme d' Or. Directed by Ira Sachs , who wrote the script together with Mauricio Zacharias . The entire film takes place in a single day in Sintra , a picturesque mountain village in Portugal. When the protagonist brings her extended family together on vacation, it takes a while to find out how one relates to the other, according to Owen Gleiberman in his film review in Variety .
Isabelle Huppert took on the title role of Françoise "Frankie" Crémont. Her second husband, Jimmy, is played by Brendan Gleeson . Frankie's son, Paul, who works in finance and is about to move to New York, is portrayed by Jérémie Renier , her daughter, Maya, by Sennia Nanua, and her stepdaughter, Sylvia, by Vinette Robinson . Ian, who Sylvia has been married to for 20 years, is played by Ariyon Bakare . Marisa Tomei appears in the role of her friend, the make-up artist Ilene, who Frankie wants to bring her son together , and Greg Kinnear in the role of Ilene's friend Gary, a cameraman she brings to Sintra . Pascal Greggory is Michel, the father of Paul and Frankie's first husband, who left them in the past for a man and works as a restaurateur in Paris. With the Portuguese travel guide Tiago, who is hired by the family, a folkloric element is brought into the film. He is played by Carloto Cotta .
The film was shot in Sintra, Portugal. Rui Poças acted as cameraman . The working title was A Family Vacation .
The film music was composed by Dickon Hinchliffe .
A first trailer was presented at the beginning of May 2019. The film premiered on May 20 at the Cannes International Film Festival and competed for the Palme d'Or. In August 2019 it was shown at the Melbourne International Film Festival and in September at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations. It opened in French cinemas on August 28th.
