In 1774, a few years before the French Revolution, Madame de Dumeval, the Duke of Tesis and the Duke of Wand, seek libertines to take over the Puritan court of Louis XVI. had to leave, refuge with the Duke de Walchen. The free thinker lives somewhere between Potsdam and Berlin, and hypocrisy and false virtues prevail in his country. He and his friends feel sadistic joys in games of pain, torture and humiliation, and hope to achieve a form of erotic nirvana.

Directed by Albert Serra , who also developed the story and wrote the script. Serra first staged Liberte as a play at the Volksbühne in Berlin in spring 2018 , then he filmed it.

The film received production funding of 30,000 euros from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg .

The film was shown for the first time on May 18, 2019 as part of the Cannes International Film Festival . At the end of June and beginning of July 2019 it was shown at the Munich Film Festival in the CineMasters competition. In late July and early August 2019 it was shown at the Jerusalem Film Festival . In September 2019 the film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival , in late September, early October 2019 at the New York Film Festival and in November 2019 at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata . The cinema release in Germany was on September 12, 2019.
