Joaquim Sapinho (* 1964 in Sabugal ) is a Portuguese film director and producer .

Career

At 16, Sapinho went alone to Lisbon, where he often attended the Cinemateca Portuguesa and subsequently studied film. Today he is a lecturer in directing at the Lisbon Theater and Film School, the ESTC ( Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema ), where he was once a student.

In order to be able to turn his desire to make films into reality, he founded the production company Rosa Filmes . His first film, Corte de Cabelo (“Haircut”), premiered at the 48th Locarno Film Festival . It became a hit with audiences (among the 25 most-viewed Portuguese films since 1974) and received a number of awards (in Geneva, Angers, Chicago, Spain and the USA).

His next feature film, A Mulher Polícia , won a number of international awards (Cuba, Spain and Italy) and received very good reviews, but failed to repeat the box office success. While his debut was still a fast-paced film with a mixture of humor, sex and thoughtfulness, his second film was serious and atmospheric.
