Giovanna Mezzogiorno (born November 9, 1974 in Rome ) is an Italian film and stage actress .

Life

As the daughter of actors Vittorio Mezzogiorno and Cecilia Saachi, Mezzogiorno grew up in show business. She received her acting training at the Center International de Créations Théatrales with Peter Brook , one of the most important contemporary theater directors. Her film career started in 1997 with the award-winning feature film Il viaggio della sposa (The Bride's Journey) . Mezzogiorno received her first international engagement in 2000 for a supporting role in Les Miserables with Gérard Depardieu and John Malkovich . The following year she starred in the award-winning film L'ultimo bacio (One Last Kiss) , for which she was nominated for the David di Donatello , the Italian Film Academy Award. She starred alongside Javier Bardem in the 2007 literary adaptation of Love in the Times of Cholera .

In 2010 Mezzogiorno was appointed to the competition jury of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival .

Awards

In 2003 Mezzogiorno was awarded the David di Donatello for the best leading role, the award of the Italian film critic for the best actress and the award for the best female leading role at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) for The Window Opposite . With the Coppa Volpi for best actress, she received another important international award in 2005 for the portrayal of Sabina in Cristina Comencini's film La bestia nel cuore at the Venice Film Festival .
