Xenia - A New Greek Odyssey ( Greek Ξενία , Xenia ) is a Greek film by Panos H. Koutras . The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard series at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival . The cinema release in Germany was on January 15, 2015.

The brothers Danny and Ody are fundamentally different: while 18-year-old Ody is grounded and mature and has built up an existence in Athens despite his Albanian origins, 16-year-old Danny is volatile, adventurous, gay and still lives with his mother in Crete . When his mother dies, Danny wants to stay with Ody in Athens to plunge into the nightlife there. After a nightly incident, the two decide to look for their long-lost, wealthy father, who is said to be in Thessaloniki . Once there, they encounter the casting for the “Superstar” singing competition. Ody hopes to finally realize his dream of becoming a musician.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 85% of the reviews are positive, out of a total of 13 reviews. The film service judges: " The film carefully describes the step-by-step approach of two fundamentally different brothers, of whom the elder takes on the role of a surrogate father and through his care heals the emotional injuries of the younger."

Awards

The film won the Q Hugo Award at the 2014 Chicago International Film Festival and the Special Jury Award at the 2014 Gijón International Film Festival. At the Hamburg Film Festival in 2014, he received a nomination for the political film prize of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation . At the Hellenic Film Academy Awards 2015, the film received 15 nominations and was a. a. Awarded for Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Aggelos Papadimitriou) and Best Screenplay.
