Fabrice Du Welz (born October 21, 1972 in Belgium ) is a Belgian director and screenwriter .

Life

Fabrice Du Welz studied Dramatic Arts at the Conservatoire royal in Liège and graduated with a diploma. He later studied at the Institut national supérieur des arts du spectacle et des techniques de diffusion, généralement appelé sous la forme abrégée Institut national supérieur des arts du spectacle (INSAS for short) in Brussels .

In 1997, Du Welz's first animated film, Folles aventures de Thierry Van Hoost, was made . His short film Quand on est amoureux c'est merveilleux followed in 1999 . Du Welz presented the slasher film Calvaire at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival . The film was shown at the Fantasy Film Festival that same year . In his horror film Vinyan , Du Welz tells of a couple who are looking for their son who disappears as a result of the tsunami disaster in December 2004 . The film premiered at the 2008 Venice Film Festival . In 2010, Du Welz was a member of the jury for the Festival of American Films , a French film festival dedicated to American independent cinema .

In 2014 Du Welz presented his horror film Alleluia - A Murderous Couple at the Cannes International Film Festival , which was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2016 Magritte Belgian Film Awards.

In 2016, his film Message from the King was presented in the Vanguard section of the Toronto International Film Festival , where Du Welz had already presented his films Vinyan and Alleluia .
