Still the Water ( Japanese 2 つ 目 の 窓 , Futatsume no Mado , German “the second window”, German TV title Immer wieder das Meer ) is a Japanese film by Naomi Kawase from 2014. The film was shown in the competition for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival 2014 and in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the Toronto International Film Festival . The film opened in German cinemas on July 30, 2015.

On the island of Amami in Japan, the inhabitants live in harmony with nature. When a naked corpse washes ashore, the community is puzzled. The young Kaito seems to suspect something, but does not open up, not even to his best friend Kyōko. She has feelings for the silent Kaito, but also has to take care of her sick mother, who only has a few days to live.
Disappointed by his own mother, who has numerous lovers, Kaito decides to visit his father in Tokyo. More and more he comes to the realization that his mother betrayed the family. Back at Amami, he angrily confronts her. When Kyōko arrives, he reveals that he had seen his mother with the deceased and that after his death she would have easily changed to the next lover.
Kyōko's mother dies and is bid farewell to her family with a spiritual ceremony. Kaito and Kyōko finally get closer and closer and sleep together. They go swimming together naked and thus become one with the sea.

The film was in the area near Amami , Amami-Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture rotated. The music for the film was created by Hasiken , a singer-songwriter from Chichibu , Saitama .
criticism
The film service described the film as an “elegantly filmed coming-of-age story clad in wonderfully beautiful pictures ”, which was “tied into a diverse moral painting of the island cosmos in a poetic and lyrical way”. The rituals and traditions would appear “as an expression of a life-defining spirituality, especially mediated through the close connection with nature”.
Awards
June Yoshinaga , who plays the Kyoko, was awarded the 2014 Best Actress Award of the Sakhalin International Film Festival awarded. In addition, Naomi Kawase received the Peter Brunette Award for Best Director and Yutaka Yamazaki the award for best camera at the RiverRun International Film Festival . In April 2015 Still the Water won the main prize worth 15,000 euros at the International Women's Film Festival Dortmund Cologne .
