From 1988 to 1990 DeBlois worked on the television series The Raccoons , the television special The Teddy Bears' Picnic , and the feature film The Nutcracker Prince .

In 1990, after completing his studies at the Sheridan College, DeBlois was by Sullivan Bluth Studios in Dublin ( Ireland set). There he worked as a layouter, character designer and storyboard assistant to Don Bluth , for feature films such as A Troll in Central Park and Thumbleeline .

In 1994 DeBlois moved from Dublin to Los Angeles to begin his work as a storyboard writer for Walt Disney Feature Animation . There he continued the work of Chris Sanders , his frequent collaborator, as co-writer of the plot of the film Mulan . Shortly afterwards, they worked together again on the production of the film Lilo & Stitch .

In 2002 DeBlois sold several of his own film projects, including an Irish ghost story ( The Banshee and Finn Magee ), a psychological thriller ( The Lighthouse ), and an adventure story ( Sightings ), which were taken by Walt Disney Pictures , Touchstone Pictures and Universal Studios , respectively. All three projects are currently still in development.

In 2007 DeBlois made his first work in documentary films with the critically acclaimed full-length film Heima . The film shows the returning concert odyssey of the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós .

In October 2008, DeBlois came back to animation. DeBlois worked again with his colleague Sanders as a screenwriter and director for the animation film How To Train Your Dragon ( DreamWorks Animation ). The duo projected the film's plot in a different direction and, under the pressure of a tight schedule, premiered the production in March 2010. DeBlois received two Annie Awards in 2011 for his work on film .

During this time, DeBlois also directed a music film about the singer Jónsi by Sigur Rós . The film is called Go Quiet , and next to it a concert called Jónsi: Live at The Wiltern was filmed by DeBlois.
