Kedi - Von Katzen und Menschen (Original title: Kedi ) is a Turkish documentary film by director Ceyda Torun about street cats in Istanbul that was released in 2016 .

content

Thousands of cats have lived on the streets of Istanbul for centuries. Kedi describes the lives of seven of these cats (Sarı, Bengü, Psikopat, Deniz, Aslan Parçası, Duman and Gamsız) and observes and interviews people who take care of the strays. The film develops a portrait of the city and its inhabitants.

production

The cameramen built a special camera construction with which they could film the cats close to the ground. In order to be able to accompany the cats everywhere, extensive agreements had to be made in order to be able to enter private property.

The director and her crew originally selected 35 cats for the film to focus on. They filmed 19 and finally selected seven cats in the editing room.

The film was produced by Termite Films, the joint film production company of director Ceyda Torun and cameraman Charlie Wuppermann.

publication

The film premiered at the ! F Istanbul Independent Film Festival on February 21, 2016, before opening in US cinemas on February 10, 2017. The film was released on YouTube Red on May 10, 2017 . The film opened in Germany on August 10, 2017. The DVD was released on November 14, 2017. The film grossed more than $ 4 million and was included in TIME magazine's list of the ten best films of 2017.

reception

The film received mostly benevolent reviews. Dirk Giesemann discussed the film for Die Zeit and said: “The Turkish documentary Kedi - Von Katzen und Menschen lowers the work ethic: It awakens the desire to lie in the sun in front of a café on the Bosphorus.” For Michael Meyns, the film makes sense the taz “at times like an impressionistic portrait of the cats of Istanbul”. The Tagesspiegel praises the “enjoyable flow of the film”. The British animal rights activist Hilary Sable criticized in the FAZ, however, that the film shows a beautiful postcard motif and thereby denies "the ugly circumstances" "under which the animals suffer here".

The cats were named Most Compelling Living Subject of a Documentary at the Critics' Choice Documentary Awards 2017 . Torun also received the award for the best first work. Was nominated Kedi as best and as innovativster documentary. Torun was also nominated for best female director.
