action

Molly and Amy are best friends and did pretty well through high school. The ambitious Molly is the year spokeswoman, has secured a place at a renowned university and is aiming for a steep career as a lawyer. Amy was also accepted by an elite university, but first wants to do some development aid in Botswana. The day before graduation, they both come to the realization that they have been so busy worrying about their futures all along that they have failed to be teenagers. Therefore they try to experience what they have missed so far in a single night.

production

It is in Book Smart to the feature film directorial debut of Olivia Wilde .

The German synchronization was created from the dialogue director of Dennis Schmidt-Foss on behalf of EuroSync GmbH, Berlin. Lea Kalbhenn lends her voice to Molly in the German version.

The shooting took place in Los Angeles . The film music was composed by Dan the Automator . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of eight pieces of music, is to be released as a download on May 24, 2019 by Lakeshore Records.

Film exploitation

The film premiered on March 10, 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival . A first trailer was presented shortly after the premiere. The film was released in US cinemas on May 24, 2019. This was followed by publications in the US in the digital sector (on Amazon Prime and iTunes on August 20, 2019) and on DVD and Blu-ray (on September 3, 2019).

Further international publications followed immediately after the US launch, mostly in May and June 2019 in countries such as Great Britain, Hungary, Sweden, Brazil, Norway, Belgium, Australia, Spain and the Netherlands. Only in France and Switzerland did the film not appear in theaters, but directly on Netflix on May 24th .

The German theatrical release was initially announced for June 13th, 2019 via the distributor Wild Bunch , but was later postponed to November 14th via the distributor Weltkino . In October 2019 Booksmart celebrated its German premiere at the Film Festival Cologne . In Austria, the theatrical release also took place on November 14, 2019 through the distribution company Polyfilm .

In terms of marketing, the original film poster was adapted for the German market, among other things, so that the two main characters can be seen in a further section, which also enlarges the background. Instead of the simple gray of the US poster, it was given a bright yellow concrete look, which was also provided with school motif wall scribbles. The tagline was taken from "Getting Straight A's. Giving Zero F's." on "Sh *** on school - now we are celebrating!" changed. This gave the film a clear classification in the “school film” genre in the German marketing campaign, which was not the case in the US strategy.

The German trailer corresponds to the Official Restricted US trailer. There is a minor content change in the German dubbing: In the English original, Molly names Amy as role models who have successfully broken rules: the artist of the century Pablo Picasso , the civil rights activist Rosa Parks and the women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony . In the German version, Molly names Picasso , singer Amy Winehouse and US President Donald Trump as role models .

reception

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12. The reason for the release states that the film reflects various youthful lifestyles and everyday problems with a lot of dialog humor and situation comedy, but also draws its main characters sensitively. Individual conflicts, the depiction of drug consumption and erotic longings as well as the sometimes rough language could irritate and overwhelm children under the age of 12.

Reviews

So far, the film has received the approval of 97 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 8.3 out of a possible 10 points. In addition, the film emerged as the winner of the 21st Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the Best Comedies category 2019 . This places him in the top 10 of the best LGBT films of all time. Among the non-professional Rotten Tomatoes users, the film achieved an audience score of 77%. The film website CherryPicks, which was initiated by film critics and campaigns for gender equality in the field of film criticism, gives a value of 87 percent and recommends the film as worth watching.

Kai Mihm from epd Film writes that Booksmart is far too nice and forgiving to really tell something truthful about youthful life experiences: “There is no malice, no cliques and no racism in the bourgeois white world of film. Not even Amy's open homosexuality makes her a target, and even a violent, publicly registered hassle of girlfriends flows without major ado in a reconciliation. "With good will can be book smart call a romantic dream, there were some nice ideas and the great Plus, Mihm continues, the charismatic young actors are trying to revive familiar motifs, but Olivia Wilde has ironed out youthful worlds.

Peter Osteried from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that Booksmart is mildly entertaining, albeit in a more vignette-like manner: "Some scenes are funny, others are over-the-top or so exaggerated that any claim to authenticity is lost." What remains is an honorable attempt, but also a very cliché film that might entertain the target group of teenagers all along the line, but has very, very little to offer for older viewers: "Just another hearty, sordid coming-of -Age story whose feminist approach is basically only asserted. "

The youth magazine Spiesser describes the film as a "funny, light cliché comedy ", which "despite the modern presentation (see above LGBTQ inclusion) remains a typical high school comedy", which uses many clichés, has few surprising moments in store and is "sometimes extremely exaggerated". Even if "the bright colors of the recordings and the soundtrack" would work well in the cinema, "the small screen" on the laptop at home is sufficient for the film, according to the reviewer.

Bettina Steiner from DiePresse also thinks that the film does not do justice to the hype because it is too exemplary itself. "While writers and directors like Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“ Fleabag ”) or Kay Cannon (“ Sex Pact ”) demonstrate how anarchic and in the best sense shocking feminist humor can be, Olivia Wilde's film is above all good. Like its main characters he just goes overboard in a very controlled manner. (...) But all this mess, all the faux pas they step into, seem thought-out, constructed, as if there were no real shallows in a teenage life, as if disappointed love only did a few Minutes hurt and as if you just had to realize that true friends are the most important thing, and everything will be fine again. " That is "a little cute, a little funny, but unfortunately not anarchic enough".

Grossing results

On the opening weekend in the USA, Booksmart grossed around $ 6.9 million on 2,500 screens. Overall, despite good reviews, the film only grossed around $ 22 million in total in the US, which was seen as a flop in the industry.

The German theatrical release also turned out to be disappointing: On the opening weekend, the film only reached 8,655 viewers on 212 screens and grossed € 70,385. He landed at number 25 on the cinema charts. Booksmart reached a total of around 31,500 visitors in Germany with a grossing of € 204,000, a little more than 1% of the US result.
