The Episcopal Castle Purgatory ( Estonian Kiviloo piiskopilinnus ) is located near Raasiku in Harrien County in Estonia . The ruins are now in the Harju district in the village of Kiviloo on the bank of the Jõelähtme River.

history

Purgatory Castle belonged to the Bishop of Reval as table goods . Purgatory was first mentioned as a castle in 1474, when Simon von der Borch was bishop, where Purgatory Castle was mentioned as table goods next to Borkholm Castle. The fortress was badly damaged during the Livonian War , after which it became part of an estate. In the 1750s the fortress was still relatively well preserved and partially usable. In 1828 the Baltic German poet GJF Baron Ungern-Sternberg described the castle as a ruin. From 1839 until the estate was nationalized in the 1920s, it belonged to the Stackelberg family.
