The series is based on the play of the same name with her in the lead role, also written by Waller-Bridge and staged in the Soho Theater in 2013 . It was nominated for the Olivier in 2014 .
action
The Briton Fleabag lives in London and runs a rather poorly running café. She opened it together with her best friend Boo, who died before the series action began: Boo wanted to cause an accident in order to regain the attention of her boyfriend, who had slept with another woman. In the accident, however, Boo dies along with two other people. In the first season, Fleabag tries to distract herself from her feelings through various affairs. Her friend Harry, with whom she argues again and again, leaves her for good.
In addition to her grief, Fleabag has to deal with the bad relationship with her family: the husband of her perfectionist sister Claire tries to kiss her at a party, but Claire does not believe Fleabag because she has already betrayed Boo. Fleabag's father is in a new relationship with his dead wife's best friend - an artist who primarily deals with her sexuality. Fleabag, who doesn't like her new "stepmother", steals the statue of a naked woman from her studio, which she returns and steals several times over the course of the series.
At the end of the first season, Fleabag has become estranged from her family and is desperate. The second season starts a year later. Fleabag's Café is now doing well and she deliberately refrains from meaningless affairs. Her father and his partner got engaged. During the celebration, Claire miscarries. To protect her, Fleabag told those present that she had a miscarriage. In particular, Claire's husband Martin expresses himself derogatory and insensitive to the subject, so that the situation escalates and Fleabag beats Martin. At the end of the season, Claire leaves her husband for a Finnish businessman named Klare (which is pronounced the same as her own name in English).
At her father's engagement party, Fleabag also meets the Catholic priest who is to perform the upcoming wedding. He and Fleabag feel drawn to each other, and the otherwise closed Fleabag can confide in him. But the priest struggles with his feelings, which are incompatible with his office. After spending the night together, he finally tells Fleabag that he has chosen God.
Fleabag breaks through the fourth wall several times in the course of each episode and addresses the audience directly. This is broken again in the second season within the plot, as the priest notices that Fleabag is "somehow not here" and he can sometimes hear what she says to the audience.
title
The English word Fleabag describes according to the Cambridge Dictionary "a dirty and / or unpleasant person or animal" ("a dirty and / or unpleasant person or animal"). In addition to the literal translation of "flea sack", Pons offers in German transmissions such as "neglected stray, flea catcher", "disgust", "bastard", "bastard". According to Carolin Ströbele, however, the series title can hardly be translated into German as there are no female versions of the terms. But that is exactly what series creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge intended: “She invented a woman who can be a real bastard”.
synchronization
The German synchronization was for a dialogue book and the dialogue director of Matthias von Stegmann on behalf of the Arena Synchron GmbH in Berlin. She was awarded the German Dubbing Prize 2019 in the category "Best Comedy Series".
