The German Dubbing Award is the only jury award for film dubbing in the German-speaking area.

From 2001 to 2010 it was awarded the German Dubbing Prize to individual voice actors , dialogue book authors and dialogue directors, as well as to entire productions. The award was reactivated in 2018 by the Synchronverband eV - Die Gilde association and awarded again for the first time in May 2019.

background

German award for dubbing (2001-2010)

The award of the undoped prize took place annually as part of a gala. The winners received a stainless steel sculpture about 30 cm high by the artists Paul Böckelmann and ERNA, which - as a metaphor for the voice behind the original - represents a double profile. The patron of the event was the Minister for Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg .

After the award was initially awarded in three categories, the number increased in the following years. Entitled to make proposals were "all [...] distributors, film producers, TV broadcasters, dubbing studios and people and companies who were involved in the respective dubbing work" in German-speaking countries. The selection was made by an annually changing jury consisting of five to six members. In 2010 these were:

  • Nana Spier (dubbing actress, dialogue book author and dialogue director),
  • Stefan Ludwig (dialogue book author and dialogue director),
  • Harald B. Wolff (dialogue book author, dialogue director and communication designer),
  • Anke Reitzenstein (voice actress and dialogue director) and
  • Clemens Frohmann (dialogue book author and dubbing director).

In 2008 the Federal Association of German Synchronous Producers e. V. (BVDSP) as the organizer. However, due to differences between the BVDSP and the original initiator, the association decided not to participate in the 2011 German Synchronous Award . Due to the boycott of the BVDSP members, the organizers and jury of the competition decided not to allow the award ceremony to take place that year. The number of films and series submitted was too small and the selection of productions was no longer representative. After that, the award was not given for several years.

German Dubbing Prize (since 2019)

In December 2018, the Synchronverband e. V. - The guild announced that it wanted to award another jury award to draw attention to the high quality of the German-language dubbing. Since “good synchronization can only be achieved through teamwork”, from now on only entire productions will be awarded. Only the honorary award for life's work relates to the achievements of individual artists. A jury made up of a film critic, an editor and representatives of the dubbing industry will decide on the nominees and award winners.

On May 23, 2019, the first presentation of the revived award took place in the tipi at the Chancellery in Berlin .
