action

season 1

Rachel Brosnahan plays Miriam "Midge" Maisel

Miriam "Midge" Maisel lives with her husband Joel Maisel ( Michael Zegen ) and their two children in New York City . While her husband works for a plastic products company, she is a housewife herself. In their spare time, the pair visit The Gaslight Cafe nightclub in Greenwich Village , where Joel has appeared as a stand-up comedian with moderate success. Midge supports him. After a particularly unsuccessful appearance in front of the eyes of the befriended couple Imogene and Archie Cleary, Joel leaves Midge and justifies this with his boring job, the lack of prospects as a stand-up comedian and an affair with his secretary Penny.

Midge, who turns down her parents Abe and Rose Weissman's advice to win back Joel, gets drunk and finds herself at the Gaslight Cafe after a ride on the subway. By chance she comes to a microphone and begins to speak furiously in front of the audience about what she has just experienced. When she bares her breasts in order to demonstrate her attractiveness, which Joel apparently does not value, she is arrested by two police officers for immoral behavior and lack of a stage license. The Gaslight -Angestellte Susie Myerson (played by Alex Borstein ), however, recognizes Midges talent as a stand-up comedian in this scandalous appearance. She pays her bail and offers to manage it.

Midge accepts this offer and pursues a stand-up career from now on without the knowledge of her family and friends; she gives appearances, celebrates successes and suffers setbacks. Her trademark is the often improvised and direct processing of her own experiences. She not only appears in clubs, but also, for example, at private parties and at a protest in Washington Square Park. She also comes into contact with other well-known comedians like Lenny Bruce and listens to many of their appearances in order to learn. There is also a special encounter with the fictional comedian Sophie Lennon, who appears in her appearances as a simple woman from Queens , but privately but secretly pursues a luxurious lifestyle. When Midge criticizes this discrepancy during an appearance on Gaslight in the presence of Lennon's manager, she becomes a persona non grata and nowhere in town does she get more performance opportunities.

Away from the stage, Midge, who has been abandoned by her husband, has to adjust to a new life situation. The shared apartment is dissolved and Midge and the children move back to their parents, who live in the same house. She also takes a job as a cosmetics consultant in a department store. Joel also has to get used to the new life without Midge. He enters into a committed relationship with his lover Penny, but ends it again soon. Joel regrets his decision to leave Midge, but Midge does not accept his offer to try again. When he later had short-term success in his company and a new job was in prospect, he wanted to give Midge and his children more financial support.

At the end of the first season, Joel and Midge spend a night together and they can both imagine starting the relationship again. By chance, however, Joel overhears a recording of his wife's performance in a record store and learns of her ambitions as a stand-up comedian. In a bad mood, he quits his job during a presentation and finds himself in the Gaslight in the evening. Despite being banned from the city's stages, Midge has another chance to perform that evening with the assistance of Lenny Bruce . Midge apparently doesn't notice Joel who is present and speaks disrespectfully about Joel's approach. Joel is mad at Midge, but when a man insults Midge during their performance, Joel follows him out of the pub and starts a fight with him. Afterwards, talking to himself, he recognizes her talent as a stand-up comedian ("She is good."). The season ends with the end of Midge's appearance in Gaslight: While she had previously always appeared under pseudonyms (most recently: Amanda Gleason), she is now saying goodbye for the first time under her married name, Misses Maisel.

season 2

Midges mother Rose Weissmann travels to Paris alone. Midge flies after Abe with her father as they don't know about Rose's future plans. Midge makes an unplanned gig at a Paris nightclub.

season 3

Midge Maisel appears in the opening act of the six-month tour of the Afro-American singer Shy Baldwin.

reception

criticism

According to Metacritic, 25 of the 27 evaluated reviews rate the first season positively, while 2 rate it mixed. Overall, the Metascore is 80. According to Rotten Tomatoes , 96 percent of the reviews evaluated were positive.

Mrs. Maisel's success was probably also due to the fact that the Amazon production came at exactly the right time exactly a year ago. She appeared shortly after the then head of Amazon Studios, Roy Price, was suspended on charges of sexual harassment. The #MeToo debate had just started, ”said Marietta Steinhart on Zeit Online . “In her astute dialogues, the showrunner and author Sherman-Palladino anticipated many topics that should occupy all of Hollywood in the past year: everyday sexism and gender disparity. "Men claim that only men are funny," Midge told her audience. In another scene, the owner of a comedy club almost doesn't let her on stage because he is convinced that a woman cannot be pretty and funny at the same time . "

Awards

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was named Best Series - Comedy / Musical at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards . Rachel Brosnahan also received an award for Best Actress in a Series - Comedy / Musical .

In similar categories ( Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Rachel Brosnahan and Best Comedy Series ) awards could be won at Critics Choice Awards, while Alex Borstein was nominated for her role for best supporting actress in a comedy series, but could not win.

In 2018, the series won eight Emmy Awards . These included the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and an Emmy for Rachel Brosnahan in the title role for "Best Actress" in a comedy series, others for directing and scripting, and Alex Borstein won for "Best Supporting Actress".
