The Gaslight Cafe was a cafe in the district of Greenwich Village in New York City , in the basement of the house 116 MacDougal Street. It opened in 1958 and is known as a folk music venue . Jazz musicians and stand-up comedians also performed there . In 1971 it was closed.

history

The Gaslight Cafe was originally a “basket house”, where artists passed a basket to collect money after their performance. The café, opened by John Mitchell in 1958, first featured the beatnik poets Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso , but later became increasingly a folk music club. In 1961, John Moyant bought the club and was run by his father-in-law Clarence Hood and son Sam in the late 1960s. Later it belonged to Ed Simon, the owner of The Four Winds, most recently Betty Smyth, the mother of Patty Smyth , led it together with the blues guitarist Susan Martin.

Folk musician and actor Gil Robbins worked as the club's manager in the late 1960s.

The club made history in popular culture through the performances of numerous well-known artists, including Eric Andersen , Joan Baez , Eric Clapton , Bob Dylan , Ramblin 'Jack Elliott , Mimi Fariña , José Feliciano , Richie Havens , Jimi Hendrix , Charles Mingus , Joni Mitchell , Phil Ochs , Tom Paxton , Buffy Sainte-Marie , Pete Seeger , Bruce Springsteen and Big Mama Thornton .

Bob Dylan recorded his album Live at The Gaslight here in 1962 .

Afterlife

The rock band The Gaslight Anthem named themselves after the legendary café.

It is also a setting in the movie Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and plays the central role in the television series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (since 2017).
