LazyTown is an Icelandic television series for children. It was produced in 2004 and is broadcast in Germany and Austria on Super RTL under the title LazyTown - Los geht’s in 35 episodes. In the series, real film , cartoon and computer animation are combined. The idea for the series comes from Magnús Scheving , who also embodies the hero Sportacus . He was aerobics vice world champion and with the series tries to make children want to play, exercise and eat healthy.

action

The series revolves around a town called Lazy Town, the name of which is derived from the English lazy ('lazy'). But the general laziness comes to an end when Sportacus and Stephanie show up. Soon there is no trace of laziness in Lazy Town. But one thing bothers a lot: Freddie Faulig. Freddie just wants to have some peace and quiet and laze around. Therefore he tries again and again to finally get rid of Sportacus with all sorts of tricks and - always easy to see through - disguises. But ultimately he has no chance against this.

Eight-year-old Stephanie, played in the first two seasons of Julianna Rose Mauriello , is one of the three characters in the series portrayed by real people, alongside the two men, Sportacus and Freddie Faulig. All other figures in the series are represented by hand puppets.

With the song Bing Bang (Time To Dance) , the fictional heroes of the series were able to reach number four in the British single charts in 2006 .

The series was broadcast in more than 170 countries and translated into around 30 languages.

main characters

Sportacus is the hero of the series. Thanks to its magic crystal, which beeps whenever someone is in danger in Lazy Town, it is always there when someone needs help. He teaches Lazy Town residents how to eat healthily. He lives in an airship that hovers over the city.

Stephanie is the mayor's niece and is new to town. She loves dancing and, together with Sportacus, motivates the other children to play and do sports. She wears a pink wig and clothes of the same color.

Freddie Faulig lives underground in Lazy Town and loves lazing around . Sportacus is a thorn in his side, because since he has been in town and motivates everyone to be active and do sports, his peace of mind has been disturbed. He is constantly trying to get rid of Sportacus with the help of tricks. The effort that this creates for him is downright ironic: Due to his constant new plans, he is possibly the most active person in town.

Uncle Meinhard (Meinhard Meintsgut) is Stephanie's uncle and mayor of Lazy Town. As his last name suggests, he is a kind-hearted person, who occasionally experiences a little mishap. Then Sportacus and Stephanie can help take action. Obviously he is in love with Senta Senfdazu, which is never mentioned on the show.

Senta Senfdazu likes to talk and is a little hectic. She is in love with Meinhard, the mayor of Lazy Town. This is also never further explained or addressed.

Trixie is Stephanie's best friend. She often appears very opinionated and vain. However, she has a good heart and helps her friends when they are in need.

Pixel belongs to the Lazy Town clique and is an absolute computer genius. He only got outside contact through Stephanie; before they arrived he was a loner who always hid behind his computers.

Meini is a small, rich boy who does not like to share and believes that everything is his. But he's quite lovable at heart, which is why the other kids like him.

Ziggy is a typical lazy town resident - he is a very cute, plump, but helpful and friendly boy and is one of Stephanie's best friends. He always has sweets in his pockets.

Reviews

The series has received several critical acclaim for its positive effect on children and has been described as educationally valuable. Among other things, the series encourages children to forego sweets more and shows that sporting activities can also be fun. Furthermore, figures like Sportacus (based on Spartacus ) and Stephanie are good role models and call for non-violence and helpfulness. However, the overly kitsch design of the hand puppets and the city itself was criticized. However, the show's producers said the show should be purposely "playful and slightly kitschy".

Offshoot

As of September 2008, an offshoot called LazyTown Extra was broadcast in the UK . Skits with the LazyTown characters are shown in 26 episodes lasting between 11 and 15 minutes. The series is aimed at three to six year old children.

Others

  • In 18 episodes the series uses, among other things, the Unreal Engine 3 for the 3D animations, which are also used in various computer games.
  • In 2016, the song "We are Number One" from the eleventh episode of the fourth season became an internet phenomenon after Stefán Karl Stefánsson , the actor who played the role of Freddie Faulig, publicly announced that he had cancer.
