Stefán Karl Stefánsson

Stefán Karl Stefánsson (born July 10, 1975 in Hafnarfjörður ; † August 21, 2018 ) was an Icelandic actor . He became internationally known for his role as Freddie Faulig (originally Robbie Rotten ) in the Icelandic children's television series LazyTown .

Life

Stefán Karl Stefánsson was interested in the theater from an early age . At the age of thirteen he staged his first amateur play . After school he started working as a puppeteer on television. In 1999 he graduated from the Icelandic Drama School. In contrast to the school management, he had sympathy for the Commedia dell'arte and physical clowning . He found a job at the Icelandic National Theater , where he starred in performances such as Der kleine Horrorladen or Cyrano de Bergerac . The performance of the tragic comedy Stones in His Pockets became the most successful production in Iceland with 180 performances.

Together with Magnús Scheving he played the villain in the successful musical LazyTown . Scheving was able to persuade Nickelodeon to adapt the musical as a television series. Stefán Karl, who hadn't spoken a word of English until then , hired a language teacher and in 2004 the first season of LazyTown appeared , which was a great success.

Stefán Karl later played the Grinch in a touring theater in North America for several years .

In October 2016 he was diagnosed with biliary tract cancer, of which he died on August 21, 2018.

Stefán Karl was married to Steinunn Ólína Þorsteinsdóttir; the couple had three daughters and one son.

Stefán Karl 's song "We are Number One" sung in LazyTown , which was first released in the 107th episode of the series on October 3, 2014, became an Internet meme of the series under the title "We are Number One but ...", in which the song is picked up and edited.

Honor

In June 2018 Stefán Karl was awarded the Order of the Falcon by Icelandic President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson .
