Farhad Majidi Ghadikolaei ( Persian فرهاد مجیدی; * June 3, 1976 in Tehran ) is a former Iranian soccer player . He was a member of the Iranian national team and one of the most popular stars of Esteghlal Tehran among fans . In 2010, he was nominated for Asian Footballer of the Year and came second in the election.

Career

After Majidi had played for Esteghlal Tehran for several years, he went to the Vienna football club SK Rapid Vienna . There he only played one season and then moved to Al-Wasl in the UAE Arabian Gulf League . At the side of his compatriot Alireza Nikbakht Vahedi , Majidi reached the top of the table with the team, but also had bad luck with injuries.

One of the highlights of Majidi's career was his brief loan to Al Ain Club . Majidi was the star of the 2003 AFC Champions League semi-final against Dalian Shide . His goal helped Al Ain advance to the AFC Champions League final, after all, the team won the AFC Champions League for the first time in history.

In the five years that Majidi played for Al Wasl FC, he has scored over 100 goals. He left Al Wasl in 2006 and went to Al-Nasr Sports Club (Dubai) . On February 10, 2007 Majidi got a contract until the end of the season with Al-Ahli (United Arab Emirates) . After that, Majidi signed a contract with Esteghlal for a season . He extended his contract with Esteghlal for two more years and was mostly used as an attacking midfielder. He also held the captaincy there. He won the championship with Esteghlal and was his team's top scorer in the 2009/10 season. After a brief stint at the Qatari club al-Gharafa Sports Club , he ended his career in 2013 by winning the championship at Esteghlal.

From 1996 to 2011 he played 45 games for the Iranian national soccer team , in which he scored ten goals.

The former captain (کاپيتان) and number seven of the Esteghlal team announced his retirement from football on September 28, 2012 (on the seventh, seventh of the Persian calendar). Farhad Majidi was accepted into Esteghlal's first team after a 2 month football break and won the IPL 2012/2013 as captain.
