Andranik Eskandarian (born December 31, 1951 in Tehran ) is a former Iranian football player of Armenian origin. He has been a US citizen since 1984 .

The defender Eskandarian played for the Tehran club Esteghlal Tehran and took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina for the Iranian national team. At the first World Cup participation of the Iranians, his team against Scotland caused a surprise with a 1-1 draw, which ultimately led to the Scottish elimination from the tournament. Eskandarian scored an own goal to make his team 0-1 deficit.

Shortly after the World Cup , Eskandarian emigrated to the USA, where he received a professional contract at Cosmos New York alongside Franz Beckenbauer . He played there until 1984 and was, despite the political conflict between the USA and Iran in the late 1970s and early 1980s, one of the most popular footballers on the US soccer scene.

After 1984 he played with the indoor soccer club New York Express (1985-1986) and the New Jersey Eagles (1989-1990), together with the German goalkeeper Hubert Birkenmeier , with whom he had already played at NY Cosmos.

His son Alecko Eskandarian (* 1982 ) is also a footballer. He plays for CD Chivas USA and has so far played an international match for the US national team .
