Alecko Eskandarian (born July 9, 1982 in Montvale , New Jersey ) is a retired American football player . The striker last played for Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer .
He is currently an assistant trainer at New York Cosmos .
Player career
Youth and college
Eskandarian attended Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell , New Jersey . In 2000 he received the Gatorade National High School Athlete of the Year Award for his service on the high school school team. In his senior year he scored 66 goals in 25 games. For this he was awarded NSCAA / adidas All-American and New Jersey State Player of the Year . By the time he finished school he had scored a total of 154 goals, the most in Bergen County and the second-most in New Jersey.
From 2000 to 2002 he attended the University of Virginia and played for the Virginia Cavaliers in their college soccer team. In 2002 he received the Hermann Trophy. During his time in college, he was one of the Cavaliers' finest players. Overall, he scored 50 goals in 60 games in three years and was awarded several honors.
He returned to the University of Virginia in 2010, graduated, and took on a position as assistant coach with the Cavaliers.

In the 2003 MLS SuperDraft he was drafted as the 1st pick in the first round by DC United . During his first season, he scored three goals in 23 games. In 2004 Piotr Nowak became the team's coach and Eskandarian took on a bigger role in the team. In the regular season he scored 10 goals and was instrumental in winning the 2004 MLS Cup with his four goals in the play-offs . After scoring two goals in the final, he was named Most Valuable Player of the Game. Because of his performance, he was appointed to the MLS All-Star Team and scored in the All-Star game East against West, a goal for the Eastern Conference All-Stars.
The 2005 season ended early Eskandarian. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and could not play most games of the season. In 2006 he returned and scored a goal in the first league game. Another six goals followed and Eskandarian was called up again for the All-Star game of the MLS. In this game against Real Madrid scored the equalizer to 1: 1.
On December 22, 2006, he was sold to Toronto FC . With the Canadians, however, he only stayed until May 2007. Toronto exchanged him on May 22, 2007 for Jeff Cunningham from Real Salt Lake . He stayed in Salt Lake City for the rest of the season. In total, he was on the field 23 times in the 2007 season and scored seven goals.
As part of the MLS SuperDraft 2008, he moved to CD Chivas USA for a transfer fee . Due to an injury, he was out the first half of the season, but was able to score five goals in eight games at the end of the season.
On July 1, 2009, he moved again, this time to Chiva's local rivals Los Angeles Galaxy. He also scored his first goal for his new employer in his July 4th debut for Galaxy. On July 19, Eskandarian was injured during a friendly against AC Milan. A ball hit him in the face and he suffered a broken nose and a traumatic brain injury. Due to this injury, he was sidelined until March 2010 and then did not return as a player.
After serving as an assistant coach for his former college team, Virginia Cavaliers, for a year, he became junior technical director at Philadelphia Union on June 15, 2011 . In February 2013, New York Cosmos announced they had signed Eskandarian as their new assistant coach.
National team
Alecko Eskandarian played a game for the US national team. On May 27, 2003 he ran for the USA in the game against Wales .
He was also part of the US U-17, U-20 and U-23 national teams. In the qualifying tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he scored four goals.

- Eskandarian is of Armenian descent. His father is the former Iranian international Andranik Eskandarian , who played football in the USA from 1979 to 1990.
- He starred in an episode of the reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians . During that episode, he had a blind date with Kardashian .
