The LFP Awards (Spanish Premios LFP ) have been awarded annually since the 2008/09 season by the highest Spanish league, the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP), to clubs and players in the Spanish Primera and Segunda División . The last time the prizes were awarded was after the 2015/16 season.
By 2014, a technical committee selected three finalists in each of the categories. The first and second division coaches then selected the winners from these finalists. The best player and the best coach of the season, on the other hand, were chosen by the players active in that season. Since 2014, only the three team captains of each club have voted in all categories, although they are not allowed to vote for players or the coach of their own club.
Since the prizes were not awarded by an expert jury, the results of the awarding of the prize repeatedly triggered discussions in the past. After the 2010/11 season , instead of Cristiano Ronaldo , who had set a new goal record with 40 league goals , Lionel Messi from champions FC Barcelona was named the best striker. Similarly, after the 2011/12 season, instead of José Mourinho , who had led Real Madrid to the championship with a new point and scoring record, Pep Guardiola from runner-up FC Barcelona was voted best coach. At the 2013 awards ceremony, the LFP sparked discussions because, in addition to the award for the best player, it presented a one-time award for the Most Valuable Player at its own discretion in order to honor the previously ignored Cristiano Ronaldo. When after the 2013/14 season not a single player was awarded a prize by champions Atlético Madrid , the awarding of the award hit the headlines once again.
