Sergio Martínez Ballesteros (often just Ballesteros ; born September 4, 1975 in Burjassot , Valencia Province ) is a Spanish football player . He is the team captain of Levante UD in the Primera División .
Life
Ballesteros began his career as a youth player at UD Levante and played for the first time in the first team with this club in 1995 in the Segunda División B . During an encounter between the Copa del Rey and CD Tenerife , coach Jupp Heynckes , who was then working for Tenerife, noticed him, and he was signed to the club in the Canary Islands and made his first appearance in the Primera División on January 3, 1996. By 2000 Ballesteros had 102 missions for the Tinerfeños .
He was then a regular at Rayo Vallecano for a year , before signing for three seasons at Villarreal CF in 2001 (81 games). From 2004 to 2008 he played for RCD Mallorca (103 appearances) in the Balearic Islands, before returning to his home club in 2008. UD Levante was in the following season 2009/10 - as until today - one of the oldest teams in Spanish paid football and still managed to get promoted to the honor division with a march with only three away defeats. Even if Ballesteros and his peers in 2010/11 struggled to stay in the Primera División (15th place), at the beginning of the 2011/12 season on matchday eight the surprise of temporarily taking over the table ahead of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona .
