Career

society

Abidal started playing football at Cascol Oullins and later moved to Lyon Duchère AS , both amateur clubs from Lyon. 2000 signed him AS Monaco , for which he made his competitive debut on September 16, 2000 in the game against FC Toulouse . In 2002 Claude Puel , who had already trained him in Monaco, brought him to Lille OSC . If it was initially only loaned out, the club took up the purchase option. In 2004 Abidal returned to his birthplace and signed a four-year contract with Olympique Lyon . Abidal scored two competitive goals for Lyon, one in the French Cup and one in the French League Cup .

In the summer of 2007 he moved to FC Barcelona for 15 million euros , where he was awarded a four-year contract. He was used 46 times for the Catalans in his first year . In his second season he played 30 games and won the triple with his team . However , Abidal had to watch his team's victory in the Champions League final in 2009 from the stands, as he saw a red card in the semi-final second leg against Chelsea after a foul on Nicolas Anelka . In his third season with the Catalans, he was first choice despite signing Maxwell at the beginning of the season. Barcelona then extended the contract with Abidal on November 25, 2009 for a year until 2012. In February 2010, Abidal suffered a knee injury that put him out of action for two months. He then plagued a groin injury, through which he lost his regular place in favor of Maxwell over the course of the season. In the 2010/11 season he regained his regular place and moved to the position of central defender after the injury of Carles Puyol . On January 5, 2011, he scored his first goal in the second leg of the Cup against Athletic Bilbao at the San Mamés stadium . The game ended 1-1 and FC Barcelona advanced to the next round due to the away goals rule.

On March 15, 2011, FC Barcelona announced that a tumor had been discovered in Abidal's liver. Two days later it was removed without complications. The doctors predicted a break of several months. But at the beginning of May 2011 Abidal was called into the squad for the Champions League second leg against Real Madrid and came on as a substitute for Carles Puyol in the 90th minute to a standing ovation from the audience. In the final of the competition, he was part of the starting line-up and was the first to accept the trophy won by Carles Puyol.

At the beginning of February 2012, Abidal extended his contract with Barcelona until 2013. The contract also included the option of an annual extension until 2015. On April 9, 2012 Abidal underwent a liver transplant due to his cancer . He and his donor, a cousin, survived the operation well. Six months later, Abidal completed his first training session after the transplant in early October 2012, and two more months later he returned to team training. On February 21, 2013, the club's doctors declared him fit to play. He made his comeback on April 6, 2013, when he was substituted on in the 70th minute of the 5-0 win against RCD Mallorca.

On May 30, 2013, Abidal announced that he would leave Barcelona after six years as his end-of-season contract would not be renewed, although he would have liked to stay. In July 2013 he signed a one-year contract with AS Monaco with an option for a further year.

For the 2014/15 season Abidal moved to Olympiacos in the Greek Super League . After nine league and six Champions League appearances for Olympiakos, Abidal ended his career at the age of 35 with a 5-0 away win against FC Kalloni on December 20, 2014.

As of the 2018/19 season, Abidal will be the managing director of Sport at FC Barcelona, having been named the club's “ambassador” a year earlier.

National team

Éric Abidal was first used on August 18, 2004 for the French national team when the team played against Bosnia and Herzegovina . Abidal slowly gained a regular position as a left full-back. He prevailed in this position against Mikaël Silvestre .

He was also part of the 23-man squad for the 2006 World Cup . In Germany he got a yellow card in the first two group matches, which forced Abidal to watch the last group match. Otherwise he was able to participate in every game of the French World Cup up to the final and always played through in his games. In the final against Italy Abidal was able to convert his penalty in the penalty shoot-out to 4: 3. France lost anyway and became vice world champion.

At the European Championship finals in 2008 he was also part of the French squad . After a disappointing start against Romania , Abidal was not used in the following group game against Netherlands . In the final and decisive group game, he became the tragic figure of the game after only 24 minutes when he was sent off after an emergency brake on Luca Toni . France were eliminated in the group stage as bottom group.

Also for the 2010 World Cup , Abidal was appointed to the 23-man squad by Raymond Domenech . At the World Cup , the Bleus disappointed across the board and left the tournament early as the bottom of the group. A 0-0 win against Uruguay was followed by a 2-0 win against Mexico, in which Abidal contributed to the last goal. In the final defeat against hosts South Africa, Abidal was no longer part of the starting lineup. Domenech's successor Laurent Blanc continued to rely on the full-back, who was used in a further eleven international matches until February 2012.
