View of the small town and the Vjosa (2013)

Memaliaj is a small town in southern Albania . The place in Qark Gjirokastra is located in a loop of the Vjosa , about eight kilometers north of the regional center Tepelena . At the 2011 census, 2646 inhabitants were registered. By contrast, the civil registry office recorded 7,640 people in 2008, but at least half of them are presumably abroad.

The city was founded in 1946 as the center of the local hard coal industry. Before that there was only one small village with this name on a hill west of what is now the city center. The hard coal deposits discovered in the 1930s, which began to be extracted and enriched north of the town after the city was founded, were among the three most important extraction areas in the country. In 1990 the production increased to 500,000 tons. After the collapse of the communist regime, industry was shut down. Today Memaliaj suffers from extreme unemployment. The rate is among the highest in the country. In 20 years the population fell by 50 percent. Many families live below the poverty line and each has at least one family member who works overseas.

Even today, the townscape, along with the new Orthodox Church, is largely dominated by prefabricated buildings .

Memaliaj is on the SH 4 , the thoroughfare from Fier to Tepelena, which connects central Albania with central southern Albania and the Greek border.

In the summer of 2015, Memaliaj was merged with the other municipalities in the north of the dissolved Tepelena district. These are the municipalities of Buz (737 inhabitants), Fshat Memaliaj (1606 inhabitants), Krahës (2554 inhabitants), Luftinja (1734 inhabitants) and Qesarat (1379 inhabitants). The new municipality has a total of 10,657 inhabitants (as of 2011).
