Carolyn "Carie" Brand Graves (born June 27, 1953 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is a former American rower who was 1984 Olympic champion with the eighth .

The 1.86 m tall Carie Graves from the Boston Rowing Club won the silver medal behind the East German eight at the 1975 World Championships with the US eight. The following year, the East German eight won the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, ahead of the Soviet boat and the Americans. Together with Margaret McCarthy , who like Graves belonged to the bronze eighth in 1976, she achieved fifth place at the 1979 World Championships in a double without a helmsman . In 1980 Graves won with the US eighth at the Rotsee regatta in Lucerne against the GDR eighth. Because of the Olympic boycott of many Western countries, the US eighth could not start at the 1980 Olympic Games ; the GDR eighth (1979 vice world champion) won ahead of the Soviet Union eighth (1979 world champion).

In 1981 Graves won the silver medal behind the large Soviet boat with the US eighth at the World Championships ; also in 1982 , but without Graves, and in 1983 , now again with Graves, the US eight won the silver medal behind the Soviet eight. At the Olympic Games in 1984 , the Soviet women world champions were absent, as were the world championship third from the GDR because of the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries. In Los Angeles, the US boat won by one second over the Romanians.
