Begum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The title Begum or Begüm is generally carried by a princess or princess.

The meaning does not vary as much as that of the corresponding male title Bey (originally Beg ), which can vary between the salutation for an officer and that of a lord or ruler.

The title is particularly widespread among the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent; Khaleda Zia , the former head of government of Bangladesh, uses it as well as the wives of the respective Ismaili leader Aga Khan ( e.g. Yvette Labrousse or Gabriele Inaara Begum Aga Khan ).

The reign of the Begumen became famous in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Bhopal .

Especially in India , Begum is also generally given as a birth name; as well as in Turkey as Begüm.
