The 1997 general election in Norway took place on September 15, 1997. It was the election for the 57th storting .

The biggest winners of the election were Fremskrittspartiet and Kristelig Folkeparti , who both nearly doubled their number of seats. On the other hand, Senterpartiet was unable to maintain its top result and fell back to its 1989 level.

The parliament was again composed of eight parties. Steinar Bastesen was able to move into the Storting for the Tverrpolitisk Folkevalgte list. On the other hand, Rød Valgallianse missed a mandate in Oslo by a few hundred votes.

As announced in the election campaign, the Jagland government resigned after suffering moderate losses for the Labor Party. It was followed by the bourgeois minority government Bondevik I .
