The general election in Norway in 1953 took place on October 12, 1953. It was the election for the 46th storting .

Previously, the electoral law had been modified with the aim of mapping the voting shares of the parties more precisely to the distribution of seats. In 1945 and 1949, the Labor Party in particular was favored. In 1953, the Labor Party had to surrender mandates despite the increase in votes. However, the overrepresentation was not completely eliminated, so that their absolute majority in parliament remained. The Communist Party (NKP), on the other hand, was able to profit, returning to parliament after four years of abstinence despite a slight loss of votes.

According to the old allocation rules, the Labor Party would have won 92 out of 150 seats.

The number of parliamentary groups increased from five to six.
