Marion Chesney

Marion Chesney (2006)

Marion Chesney (born June 10, 1936 in Glasgow ; † December 30, 2019 in Gloucester ) was a Scottish writer who has made a name for herself primarily through her numerous historical romance novels and crime novels .

Marion Chesney published some of her works under various pseudonyms: MC Beaton , Sarah Chester , Helen Crampton , Ann Fairfax , Marion Gibbons , Jennie Tremaine and Charlotte Ward .

Life

Marion Chesney's professional career began in a bookstore in Glasgow selling novels. She later worked as a theater critic, reporter and editor for various Scottish newspapers until she took up a position in London as chief reporter for the women's division of the Daily Express .

During this time Marion Chesney married the editor Harry Scott Gibbons and had a son with him. They temporarily moved to the United States because their husband had received a job offer there. In order to be able to stay at home with her child longer, she began writing historical novels. After more than 100 books, most of which are set in the 19th century, she switched to detective novels. A vacation in Sutherland inspired the first story of Hamish Macbeth and the family eventually moved there. Most recently she lived in a cottage in the Cotswolds , where the detective series around Agatha Raisin originated. Marion Chesney died in late 2019 at the age of 83; her husband had already died in 2016.
