Jon Lilletun

Jon Lilletun (born October 23, 1945 in Vossestrand (now part of Voss ), Norway ; † August 21, 2006 ) was a Norwegian politician and minister of the Christian People's Party .

education and profession

The son of a religious smallholder and village mailman was only able to complete nine-year elementary school because of the poverty of his parents. He later trained with a businessman and attended various business schools. In the early 1970s he opened a retail business himself, but had to file for bankruptcy within a few years. He was sentenced to 45 days' imprisonment for manipulating bookings.

From 1975 to 1989 he was a youth social worker in the municipality of Vennesla . There he ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1983. During this time he also converted from the Pentecostal church to the "Church of Norway".

Member of the Storting

From 1981 to 1985 he represented the constituency of Vest-Agder in Storting as a deputy member of parliament .

From 1989 until his death he was a member of the Storting. However, when he began to develop cancer, Deputy MP Sigmund Kroslid took over some of his duties from spring 2005.

During his time as a member of parliament he was a member of various committees and, among other things, from 1993 to 1997 he was chairman of the Standing Committee on Education, Science and Church Affairs. In addition to his membership in the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, he was also a member of the Norwegian delegations for relations with the European Parliament and NATO .

Jon Lilletun, who was also chairman of the Christian Democratic Party parliamentary group from 1993 to 1997, was most recently vice-president of the Lagting since 2005 .

Member of the government

In 1997, then Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik appointed him to his cabinet. There he was Minister for Education, Science and Church Affairs until 2000. During his tenure, the Norwegian Center for Holocaust Studies and Religious Minorities was established.
